Everything Here Still Turns

For thirty-one years a workshop off a Talat Noi side street has repaired the same electric fans. The neighbours keep bringing them back, and that is the whole business model.

The shop has no sign. It has a roller shutter that goes up at seven and a wooden bench that has been in the same place long enough to have worn a pale patch into the concrete under it. On the bench, this morning, there are four electric fans in pieces and a fifth one running, because the room is hot and somebody has to be comfortable.

Talat Noi is one of those parts of Bangkok that photographs beautifully and works hard, and the working half is easy to miss. Between the coffee places and the murals there are still machine shops, engine-part sellers, and rooms like this one, where a thing that costs four hundred baht new gets repaired for a hundred and twenty because throwing it away was never really considered.

The economics of not throwing things away

The arithmetic does not work on paper. A rewound motor takes an hour and a half. A new fan takes a walk to the shop on the corner. But the fans that come here are rarely just fans. One belonged to a mother. One has been in a shophouse kitchen since the kitchen had a coal stove. One is simply the correct fan, the one that points the right way at the right chair, and nothing bought this year will be the correct fan.

So the bench fills up. Blades get straightened by eye. Bearings get cleaned in a jar of solvent that has clearly been the same jar for a while. Cages get bent back into round with a technique that involves a knee.

Customers do not queue. They lean in the doorway, say what is wrong, and leave the fan. There is no ticket. There is a system, and the system is memory: whose fan, which house, roughly when they will want it back.

Nothing here is broken in a new way. After thirty years the machines run out of ideas.Sample pull quote. Interview text to come.

That is the part that stays with you. Not the skill, which is real, but the flatness of it. This is not craft as heritage or craft as content. It is a small business that solves a small problem for the same two hundred people, and has done it long enough that the problem and the solution have settled into each other.

What closing time means here

Closing is not a time so much as a condition. The shutter comes down when the last person who said they were coming has come. In practice that is somewhere between six and eight, and in the rainy season it is later, because people wait out the water somewhere and this is somewhere.

There is a plastic stool by the door that is not for customers, exactly. It is for whoever is around. On the afternoon we visited it held a neighbour, then nobody, then a delivery rider who stayed twenty minutes longer than the delivery required.

Ask about succession and the answer is a shrug, which is not the same as sadness. The children have work. The lane is changing at the pace lanes change, which is to say slowly and then all at once. Meanwhile there are four fans on the bench and a fifth one running.
